Ukraine said a wave of more than 20 Russian Shahed-type drones struck the Izmail district of the Black Sea port of Odesa early Wednesday, triggering a large fire at a fuel and energy installation. Local officials reported that two storage tanks at the Triton oil depot were destroyed and a third was severely damaged, while port infrastructure at the transshipment complex was also hit. One person was injured, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. A Panama-flagged tanker, the Excellion, was reportedly struck during the attack, though Ukrainian authorities did not immediately disclose the extent of maritime damage. Fire-fighters were battling the blaze as daylight broke, and emergency services warned that further explosions were possible because of the remaining fuel stock. Russia’s defence ministry, in a separate statement, said its forces destroyed 42 Ukrainian drones overnight but did not address the Odesa strikes. Wednesday’s assault follows a series of Russian drone and missile attacks aimed at Ukraine’s energy and export infrastructure as the conflict approaches its third year.
