U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are arranging their first direct talks aimed at securing a cease-fire in Ukraine and have asked him to attend. Speaking in a Fox News interview after a nearly three-hour summit with Putin in Alaska on Aug. 15, Trump said, “It’s not for me to negotiate a deal for Ukraine, but I can certainly set the table,” adding that several issues were agreed with Putin, though he declined to specify them. Trump indicated that European leaders may also be invited to the forthcoming meeting, whose date and venue have not been finalized. He stressed that the initiative’s success now depends on Kyiv, saying, “It’s really up to President Zelenskyy to get it done.” The proposed trilateral talks would mark the highest-level contact between Moscow and Kyiv since Russia’s 2022 invasion and could open a new diplomatic channel alongside existing efforts mediated by European governments.
