Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he will travel to Washington on Monday, Aug. 18, to meet U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House. The visit comes at Trump’s invitation and will mark the leaders’ first in-person talks since Trump took office in January. Zelensky announced the trip after a “long, substantive” phone call with Trump on Saturday that followed the U.S. president’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The Alaska meeting produced no agreement on ending Russia’s invasion, and Trump told reporters afterward that “there’s no deal until there’s a deal.” In Kyiv, Zelensky said Monday’s agenda will focus on “all the details regarding ending the killings and the war,” adding that any settlement must include European participation to secure Ukraine’s long-term security. He thanked Trump for positive signals on U.S. involvement in future guarantees. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Trump briefed Zelensky and later spoke with NATO and European leaders during his flight from Alaska. The Kremlin, meanwhile, said a possible trilateral meeting with Zelensky “has not been raised.” Ukraine’s air force reported overnight Russian attacks involving one ballistic missile and 85 Shahed drones, 61 of which were intercepted.
