President Donald Trump said in late-night posts on his Truth Social platform that he would support the Federal Communications Commission if it moved to revoke the broadcast licenses of ABC and NBC, describing the networks as “two of the worst and most biased in history.” Trump accused the outlets of giving him “97% bad stories” and called their coverage a “threat to democracy.” He added that, at a minimum, the companies should pay “millions of dollars a year” for the right to use the public airwaves. The comments escalate the White House’s clashes with major media groups. In July, CBS parent Paramount agreed to a US$16 million settlement of a defamation suit brought by Trump shortly before the FCC cleared Paramount’s merger with Skydance Media. FCC Chair Brendan Carr has separately opened inquiries into ABC owner Walt Disney and NBC parent Comcast over diversity and news-distortion complaints. While national networks do not hold FCC licenses directly, their local affiliates do; any effort to strip those licenses would trigger a protracted administrative process and almost certainly be challenged on First Amendment grounds. ABC and NBC have not yet responded publicly to the president’s remarks.
