Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani holds a commanding advantage in New York City’s mayoral contest, drawing 44% support among registered voters, according to a new Siena College survey conducted Aug. 1-4. Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary, trails at 25%, while Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa garners 12% and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams just 7%. Mamdani also posts the only positive net favorability rating in the four-way field, at plus 14 percentage points. In the statewide race for 2026, the same Siena poll finds Gov. Kathy Hochul leading Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik 45% to 31%. Hochul’s advantage has shrunk to 14 points from 23 points in June even as her job-approval rating improves to 53% approve versus 42% disapprove. Among registered voters, 49% say a Stefanik governorship would be bad for New York, while 37% view it positively. Long-time incumbents fare less well. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s favorability sinks to 38% positive and 50% negative—the lowest Siena has recorded since it began tracking him in 2005—while Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand stands at 36% favorable and 38% unfavorable. The erosion in sentiment mirrors a national Gallup survey released the same day showing the Democratic Party’s favorability at 34%, the lowest level Gallup has measured.
