HASSETT SAYS: “YOU CAN’T RUN AN ECONOMY ON BROKEN DATA” — CALLS FOR URGENT REFORMS
HASSETT SAYS FAULTY LABOR DATA IS “MISLEADING AMERICA” — WARNS JOB NUMBERS NO LONGER REFLECT REALITY

White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said the U.S. economy remains on "smooth sailing" despite a weak July employment report and unusual Aug. 1 revisions that aligned recent payroll figures with the private ADP survey. Speaking in televised interviews, he argued that without the latest downward revision, the employment data would be consistent with last week’s 3% annualized GDP growth estimate. Hassett charged that the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ figures are “misleading America,” declaring, “You can’t run an economy on broken data.” While stressing he does not seek to run the agency himself, he said President Donald Trump wants “his own people there” to make labor statistics more transparent and reliable, comments that come amid speculation the administration may replace the current BLS commissioner. The adviser also confirmed that Trump is “in active search” for the next Federal Reserve chair and is working with investor David Bessent on candidates. On trade policy, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the planned Aug. 12 tariff increase on Chinese goods could be delayed, although Hassett emphasized that the final decision rests with the president.
