The Congressional Budget Office said Monday that President Donald Trump’s newly enacted tax-and-spending package—dubbed the One Big Beautiful Bill by the White House and the Big Ugly Law by critics—will widen the gap between rich and poor. In its latest distributional analysis, the non-partisan agency estimated that households in the bottom 10 percent of the income scale will see their annual resources fall by roughly $1,200, a 3.1 percent drop, while the top 10 percent will gain about $13,600, or 2.7 percent, largely from expanded tax cuts. The report attributes most of the losses for low-income families to tighter eligibility and new work requirements for Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. CBO projects that the SNAP changes alone will trim monthly participation by about 2.4 million people and that alterations to Medicaid will leave some 10 million Americans without health insurance by 2034. Although middle-income households are forecast to receive a modest boost of $800 to $1,200 a year, the agency said the legislation delivers its largest benefits to the wealthiest Americans and will add an estimated $3.4 trillion to federal deficits over the coming decade. Democratic lawmakers seized on the figures as evidence of an unprecedented wealth transfer, while Republican leaders defended the measure as a pro-growth overhaul and questioned CBO’s methodology. The law cleared Congress in July on near-party-line votes and is already shaping debate as members fan out for August recess town halls.
