US House Speaker Johnson Willing To Change Federal Reserve Law and Is Dissatisfied with Fed Chair Powell, Questioning the Legal Power to Fire the Federal Reserve Chief
US House Speaker Mike Johnson said he is "disenchanted" with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and is examining whether Congress should amend the Federal Reserve Act to allow greater oversight of the central bank’s leadership. Johnson told reporters on 23 July that the legal authority to remove a Fed chair is "unclear" and signaled he is willing to pursue legislative changes if warranted. The remarks come as former President Donald Trump continues to criticize Powell over the Fed’s maintenance of elevated interest rates.
