The Pentagon has for several months blocked Ukraine from using U.S.–supplied Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) to hit targets inside Russia, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing unidentified U.S. officials. The long-range weapons, which can reach up to roughly 300 kilometers, require Washington’s approval for strikes beyond Ukraine’s borders, and at least one recent Ukrainian request was denied. U.S. officials told the newspaper the restriction is intended to encourage Moscow to enter peace negotiations. The policy limits Kyiv’s options as it seeks to counter Russian forces, even as the United States continues to provide other forms of military aid. Neither the Pentagon nor Ukrainian authorities have publicly commented on the reported constraints.
