Independent hardware maker 8BitDo has teamed with Microsoft-owned game developer Rare to release a limited-edition wireless Xbox controller that marks the studio’s 40th anniversary. Priced at $89.99 and available immediately, the Ultimate 3-Mode Controller for Xbox connects via a 2.4 GHz USB dongle, Bluetooth or USB-C and includes a charging dock. It features hall-effect joysticks, programmable rear buttons and a 1,000 mAh battery that 8BitDo says delivers about 20 hours of play on a four-hour charge. The gold-and-blue device is 8BitDo’s first wireless gamepad for Xbox consoles and is packed with visual Easter eggs referencing Rare franchises such as Sea of Thieves and Banjo-Kazooie. The collaboration arrives as Microsoft’s own Xbox Design Lab remains paused, leaving third-party manufacturers to meet demand for bespoke peripherals. Microsoft is complementing the hardware release with a Rare 40th anniversary dynamic background for Xbox Series X and S consoles. Collectibles firm iam8bit, meanwhile, will open pre-orders on Aug. 7 for a $100 four-disc vinyl box set spanning music from more than a dozen Rare titles, including Battletoads, Perfect Dark and Viva Piñata.
