U.S. Capitol Police arrested 23-year-old Oregon resident Nolan R. Churan on Wednesday morning after officers spotted a Subaru Outback with a large tricycle strapped to its roof parked illegally on the 200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue NW, an area reserved for congressional staff. A bow and arrow and an empty pistol holster were visible through the vehicle’s window, prompting officers to locate and detain the driver near the Capitol’s north barricade. After the bomb squad cleared the car, investigators recovered a handgun, a rifle, ammunition, multiple knives, axes, a halberd, a rapier sword, a medieval-style hatchet and the bow and arrow. Churan acknowledged the cache was his when questioned by police. Churan faces seven charges, including unlawful activities; carrying a pistol and a rifle without licenses; carrying a dangerous weapon; possession of a high-capacity ammunition feeding device; and possessing an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition. The USCP’s Threat Assessment Section said there is currently no evidence linking the suspect to Congress, and it is continuing to investigate his motives.
