U.S. President Donald Trump capped a five-day working trip to Scotland on 29 July by cutting the ribbon on a new 18-hole layout at Trump International Golf Links near Aberdeen, his second course on the windswept dunes and the third Trump-branded property in the country. Flanked by his sons Eric and Donald Jr., the president praised the project’s “spectacular” setting before joining former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley and 2002 PGA champion Rich Beem for an inaugural round. Although billed initially as a private stay, the visit evolved into a flurry of diplomacy. Over the weekend Trump hosted European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at his Turnberry resort, announcing a preliminary trade arrangement that keeps U.S. duties on European goods at 15%. On Monday he flew with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer between the two golf properties, discussing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the war in Ukraine and U.K.–U.S. economic ties. Trump told reporters he would return to Washington to “put out fires all over the world,” citing phone calls that helped secure a Cambodia-Thailand cease-fire and vowing to press Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on food deliveries to Gaza. The White House said several countries have since nominated the president for the Nobel Peace Prize. The high-profile trip unfolded amid tight security and persistent opposition. Police Scotland drafted officers from across Britain while the U.S. Secret Service deployed armored vehicles, including a customised “Golf Force One” cart. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the U.S. consulate in Edinburgh and in other Scottish cities over the weekend, denouncing Trump’s policies on climate, Gaza and immigration as the president played Turnberry under clear skies.
