A 25-year-old New Yorker, Kevin Mares, was shot and killed in the predawn hours of Sunday while visiting La Perla, a coastal district of San Juan, for Bad Bunny’s month-long concert residency, according to Puerto Rico police. The gunfire erupted at about 4:13 a.m. inside the bar 'Shelter for Mistreated Men.' Mares, described by investigators as an innocent bystander, was struck in the left abdomen and died at the island’s largest public hospital. Homicide detective Sgt. Arnaldo Ruiz said the violence began when several patrons started arguing; one drew a firearm and shot at least three people. Two La Perla residents in their mid-40s were wounded and remain hospitalized. Detectives have not established a motive or identified the shooter and are reviewing security-camera footage provided by the San Juan municipality. Mares had traveled with three friends for one of Bad Bunny’s 30 scheduled shows, which have drawn tens of thousands of visitors to the U.S. territory. La Perla, on the edge of Old San Juan, has long struggled with violent crime despite a widely publicized 2011 federal raid and recent efforts to promote tourism. Puerto Rico, home to 3.2 million people, has recorded 277 killings in 2025, compared with 325 in the same period last year.
