The New Jersey Devils have re-signed goaltender Jake Allen to a five-year, $9 million contract, securing the 34-year-old through the 2029-30 season at an average annual value of $1.8 million. The agreement was announced Tuesday as NHL free agency opened, removing one of the few established netminders from a thin market. Allen posted a 13-16-1 record with a 2.76 goals-against average, a .908 save percentage and four shutouts in 31 appearances last season. He briefly carried the starting load when Jacob Markstrom was injured, delivering a .919 save percentage over that span and reinforcing his value as a reliable tandem partner. Keeping Allen under contract gives New Jersey cost certainty in goal: the Markstrom-Allen pairing will count a combined $5.925 million against the cap, leaving the Devils roughly $12.5 million in remaining space to address other roster needs. General manager Tom Fitzgerald is expected to focus next on restricted free agent defenseman Luke Hughes and a potential top-nine winger. A second-round pick by St. Louis in 2008, Allen owns a 208-184-43 regular-season record, 2.76 GAA, .908 save percentage and 28 shutouts across 460 games with the Blues, Montreal Canadiens and Devils. He won the Stanley Cup with St. Louis in 2019 and said staying with "a good organization heading in the right direction" was his priority as free agency approached.
Jake Allen, all-in: "I don’t want to go somewhere where I don’t want to improve and get better even though I’m almost 35 yrs old, that’s been my mindset every year. I have that opportunity here to work with Marky and Rogie and keep that thing going.” #NJDevils
Jake Allen: "For my year and a half spent with the #NJDevils opened my eyes to something that I was unsure of at coming in. With a good organization, great group of guys, heading in the right direction, that was important to me, to be on a good team and I have that here in NJ.”
