Heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding and landslides across northern India and Pakistan, with significant impacts reported in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), Punjab, and parts of Pakistan's Punjab province. In J&K, a landslide near the Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra has resulted in at least 30 fatalities and multiple injuries, prompting extensive rescue operations by the Indian Army and CRPF, including helicopter evacuations. The Indian Railways is providing food to passengers stranded at various stations due to disrupted services. The India Meteorological Department has reported widespread thunderstorms and heavy rain in the region, with red alerts issued for parts of Himachal Pradesh. In Punjab, Pakistan, rivers including the Chenab and Ravi have seen unprecedented water flow, with the Chenab reaching up to 780,000 cusecs and the Ravi receiving a 210,000 cusec water release from India. This has led to breaches in protective embankments, flooding of multiple districts such as Lahore, Sialkot, Kasur, Faisalabad, Narowal, Okara, and Sargodha, and the displacement of residents. The Punjab government has requested military assistance to support civil administration and rescue efforts in seven districts. Record rainfall has been recorded in Sialkot, with over 405 millimeters falling in 12 hours, breaking an 11-year record. Floodwaters have damaged infrastructure, including roads and embankments, and caused agricultural losses, notably to cotton and chili crops. In Maharashtra, a building collapse in Palghar due to rain killed two people and injured nine. Flooding has also affected areas in Uttar Pradesh, including Varanasi, where the Ganga river has crossed danger levels, submerging residential and temple areas. The situation remains critical with continued heavy rainfall forecasted in various regions, prompting ongoing evacuation and relief operations.
