Heavy monsoon rains have caused severe flooding across multiple regions in Punjab, Pakistan, with rivers including the Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab, and Jhelum experiencing elevated water levels and flood surges. The flooding has inundated hundreds of villages, submerged thousands of acres of crops, and displaced numerous communities. The situation has worsened following India's release of water from major dams on rivers in its part of Kashmir, which Pakistan's Foreign Ministry confirmed after India issued warnings about potential downstream flooding. Key affected areas include Sialkot, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Chiniot, Jhang, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala, Lahore, and several others. Authorities have issued red and high-level flood alerts, with emergency responses underway including requisitioning Pakistan Army troops for relief operations. Punjab's Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif conducted aerial and ground inspections of flood-hit areas. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of ongoing severe flood threats, particularly in the Ravi river catchment areas. Floodwaters have reached urban localities such as Lahore, causing infrastructural damage and public health concerns due to emerging diseases. Several protective embankments have been breached, and evacuation efforts continue amid challenges including disrupted road connectivity and shortages of fodder for livestock. The floodwaters are advancing towards Sindh province, raising concerns about further damage. Officials remain on high alert as water levels continue to rise, with continuous monitoring and rescue operations in progress.
