Heavy rain triggered a landslide near the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra, Jammu & Kashmir, killing at least 30 people on Tuesday, senior police officer Paramvir Singh said. The popular Hindu pilgrimage, which draws thousands daily, has been suspended while rescue teams clear debris and search for survivors along the Ardhkuwari stretch of the route. The India Meteorological Department recorded 368 mm of rain in nearby Jammu and warned of more downpours and gusty winds across Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. Flooding and additional landslides have pushed the wider regional death toll to about 34, cut telecommunications, damaged highways and led to train cancellations that left many pilgrims stranded. Authorities have closed schools in several northern states and are prioritising the restoration of electricity, water supply and mobile networks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to the bereaved families and said federal and local agencies are assisting those affected.
