Kenyan President William Ruto has established a Presidential Multi-Agency Team on the War Against Corruption (MAT-WAC) to intensify the government's fight against graft. The team comprises 10 agencies, including the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), National Intelligence Service (NIS), Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Anti-Counterfeit Agency (ARA), Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA), and the Financial Reporting Centre (FRC). The Executive Office of the President chairs the team. The formation of MAT-WAC follows President Ruto's public accusations of extortion and bribery involving Members of Parliament (MPs) and Senators. The EACC has launched investigations targeting specific MPs and governors, with reports indicating that five sitting governors, eleven former governors, and twelve MPs are under probe. The EACC has recommended prosecuting three sitting governors and one former county official. However, the multi-agency team's legality has been challenged in court by four activists who argue that its creation is unconstitutional and infringes on the mandate of the EACC. Consequently, the High Court has suspended the operations of the MAT-WAC pending the outcome of the legal challenge. Meanwhile, MPs have demanded that President Ruto appear before Parliament to provide evidence supporting his corruption allegations. The tension between the Executive and Legislature over these claims continues, with some legislators threatening to impeach House speakers Moses Wetangula and Amason Kingi for not summoning the President. Church leaders have also called on President Ruto to name and prosecute legislators involved in bribery. The ongoing dispute highlights challenges in Kenya's governance and anti-corruption efforts amid broader reflections on the country's constitutional progress 15 years after the 2010 Constitution was enacted.
