Hundreds of teachers from the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE) paralysed parts of Mexico City on Thursday, launching a 24-hour national strike that began at 08:30 a.m. outside Metro Chabacano. City authorities estimated the turnout at roughly 1,500 people, with around 350 marchers initially counted on Calzada San Antonio Abad. The demonstrators—primarily from the capital’s Sections 9, 10, 11 and 60—moved through Calzada de Tlalpan, Viaducto Miguel Alemán and other arteries, forcing the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana to close lanes and redirect traffic. Protesters also freed turnstiles at Metro Chabacano, worsening congestion across the city centre. By midday, a contingent led by Section 9 leader Pedro Hernández forced entry into a building of the Education Ministry (SEP) on Isabel la Católica, scuffling briefly with staff of the Autoridad Educativa Federal capitalina before taking control of parts of the facility. Earlier stops included the headquarters of the National Teachers’ Union (SNTE) and the Federal Conciliation and Arbitration Tribunal. The CNTE is demanding the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE pension law, reversal of recent education reforms, basification for interim teachers and the restoration of salary deductions that union leaders say affected about 5,400 educators. Union representatives are seeking a tripartite dialogue with the Interior Ministry, SEP, ISSSTE and the federal education authority. Police maintained a perimeter around occupied buildings and reported no arrests or serious injuries by late afternoon. City officials urged motorists to avoid the affected corridors while negotiations between the dissident union and federal authorities remained pending.
