Ana Amelí García Gámez, a 19-year-old biology student from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), has been missing since July 12, 2025, after hiking at Pico del Águila in the Ajusco mountain range, located in the Tlalpan borough of Mexico City. Her family lost contact with her following her ascent. Since then, multiple search efforts have been launched involving local authorities including the Mexico City Attorney General's Office (Fiscalía CDMX), the Search Commission, the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC CDMX), and the Mexico City government. Rescue brigades such as the Socorro Alpino de México have been actively searching the mountainous and forested terrain, though no trace of Ana Amelí has been found. The search has been complicated by difficult terrain and weather conditions. Family members, including her mother Vanessa Gámez, have publicly appealed for assistance, even visiting Mexico City's National Palace to request help from President Claudia Sheinbaum. The mother has expressed concern that Ana Amelí may no longer be in the area and has called for the intervention of federal forces, including the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) and the Navy (SEMAR), to aid in the search. The Security Cabinet has responded by reinforcing search efforts with additional personnel from the National Guard and coordinating with the Secretariat of the Interior to maintain contact with the family. Over 900 personnel are reported to be involved in the search operation. Community groups, feminist collectives, university faculty, and volunteers have also participated in search and protest activities demanding accelerated and expanded investigations. Despite these efforts, after more than two weeks, Ana Amelí remains missing, and authorities continue to investigate the possibility that she may have left the mountain area.
