Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has recently inaugurated several healthcare infrastructure projects across multiple states, including the expansion of the Hospital General IMSS-Bienestar in Rioverde, San Luis Potosí. During the inauguration, Sheinbaum highlighted the negative impacts of neoliberal privatizations on the country’s healthcare system. She also announced the construction of a new hospital in Ciudad Valles, expected to benefit over 200,000 people. In the northern states of Sinaloa, Sonora, Baja California, and Baja California Sur, Sheinbaum inaugurated additional health sector works, including the first stage of the Hospital General Regional No. 23 of IMSS in Ensenada, Baja California, alongside Governor Marina del Pilar. The federal government plans to donate the old Hospital General building in Culiacán to IMSS for rehabilitation to provide neurosurgery and traumatology services. The IMSS Bienestar program has achieved a reduction in surgery wait times at the Hospital General “Dr. Rubén Leñero” in Mexico City, from six months to less than two weeks. Additionally, five IMSS clinics (7, 8, 9, 10, and 11) are undergoing renovations to improve spaces, facilities, and patient care. Separately, the Mexican government launched the Chocolate del Bienestar, a new national product made from cacao sourced directly from producers in Chiapas and Tabasco under the Sembrando Vida program. The chocolate is available in three presentations: a 20-gram bar priced at 14 pesos, powdered chocolate at 38 pesos, and table chocolate at 96 pesos. Despite bearing three health warning labels, the product has been promoted as a healthy treat by María Luisa Albores, head of Alimentación para el Bienestar.
