China has stepped up diplomatic engagement as tensions between Iran and Israel persist. In a 24 June phone call, Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi that Beijing is in contact with both Tehran and Tel Aviv and hopes to see a “real ceasefire,” according to a Foreign Ministry statement. Wang said China supports Iran’s efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and security, opposes the use or threat of force and encourages all parties to resume dialogue on an equal footing. He also highlighted Tehran’s pledge not to pursue nuclear weapons and affirmed Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy. In a follow-up statement issued on 16 July, Wang reiterated that Beijing will “continue to support Iran in resisting power politics and bullying” and is prepared to play a constructive role in resolving the Iranian nuclear issue and maintaining stability in the Middle East. He urged the UN Security Council to shoulder its responsibility in upholding regional peace.
