Dev Hynes has revived his Blood Orange project with “Essex Honey,” his first studio album since 2019’s “Angel’s Pulse.” The record is scheduled for release on Aug. 29 through RCA Records and reflects on Hynes’s childhood in England’s Essex region and themes of grief and acceptance. Ahead of the launch, Hynes released two tracks. “Mind Loaded,” featuring Lorde, Caroline Polachek and Mustafa, pairs a winding piano line with layered vocals, while “Somewhere In Between” returns to the warm guitar-driven sound of his earlier work. The 14-track LP is characteristically collaborative. Contributions come from Turnstile frontman Brendan Yates, author Zadie Smith in her first vocal appearance on a record, Daniel Caesar, Wet’s Kelly Zutrau and others. Hynes wrote, produced and recorded the album himself. Blood Orange will support the release with a brief North American and European tour beginning Sept. 21 at the Portola Music Festival in San Francisco, followed by dates with Lorde and Turnstile and a six-night residency at Brooklyn Steel concluding Dec. 5.
