A tour bus carrying roughly 50 passengers overturned on Interstate 90 near Pembroke, about 30 miles east of Buffalo, on Friday afternoon, killing several people—including at least one child—and injuring dozens more, according to the New York State Police. State Police spokesperson James O’Callaghan said the vehicle, which was returning to New York City from Niagara Falls, lost control for “unknown reasons,” rolled into a ditch and left some riders ejected and others trapped. The incident prompted a large-scale response: Mercy Flight deployed three helicopters and other air-ambulance services were called in while ground crews extricated passengers. Erie County Medical Center reported receiving eight patients by mid-afternoon. Two injured children were flown to Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, while one adult each was taken to ECMC and Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Authorities described the scene as an active mass-casualty operation with additional transfers expected. Governor Kathy Hochul said her office is coordinating with state police and local officials. All lanes of the New York State Thruway remain closed in both directions near the crash site as investigators work to determine what caused the bus to overturn.
