Russian President Vladimir Putin told U.S. President Donald Trump during their 15 Aug. summit in Anchorage, Alaska, that Moscow would end its full-scale war if Ukraine withdrew from the entire Donbas, according to accounts reported by the Financial Times, Reuters and Axios. Sources briefed on the closed-door talks said Putin offered to "freeze" combat operations along the remainder of the 1,200-km front—particularly in the occupied Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions—and ease other territorial claims if Kyiv ceded all of Donetsk and Luhansk. Russia already controls about three-quarters of those provinces. Trump relayed the proposal on 16 Aug. to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders, arguing that a comprehensive peace deal should take precedence over an interim cease-fire. Zelensky rejected the territorial demand, while European capitals reiterated that any settlement must respect Ukraine’s internationally recognised borders and include binding security guarantees. The plan would formalise Russian control over roughly one-fifth of Ukraine and leave Kyiv’s key defensive cities in northern Donetsk exposed. Zelensky is due in Washington on Monday for follow-up talks, but diplomats on all sides signalled little immediate prospect of agreement.
