On August 17, 2025, Russian forces launched a large-scale drone attack targeting Odesa Oblast in southern Ukraine, including a strike on an oil depot operated by the Azerbaijani SOCAR company near Orlivka. This facility had previously been attacked by Russian forces on August 8. The assault involved a swarm of Shahed and Geran-type long-range suicide drones, causing explosions across cities and infrastructure sites in eastern Ukraine. The attack occurred shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin met with U.S. President Donald J. Trump in Alaska and just ahead of a scheduled meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. In response, Ukrainian forces conducted drone strikes on targets within the Russia-controlled city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. Footage has also emerged showing Ukrainian drones hitting residential buildings in southern Russia.
