President Donald Trump said in a late-Sunday Truth Social post that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “can end the war with Russia almost immediately” if Kyiv relinquishes any claim to Crimea and abandons its bid to join NATO. Trump reiterated that retaking the peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014, and entering the Western military alliance are “off the table.” The message comes hours before Zelenskyy is due at the White House on Monday for talks with Trump and seven European leaders—including NATO chief Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen—on a possible path to end the three-and-a-half-year war. The unusually broad summit is expected to focus on long-term security guarantees and military support for Ukraine. Zelenskyy, who landed in Washington on Sunday night, said he shares a desire to end the conflict “quickly and reliably,” but added that any peace must be durable and avoid repeating earlier concessions that allowed Russia to consolidate control over occupied territories. Trump’s comments follow his 15 Aug. meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, where he said Moscow was prepared to halt hostilities if Kyiv accepted territorial concessions. The Alaska talks ended without a cease-fire, leaving Monday’s White House meeting to test whether the gap between Washington’s new terms and Kyiv’s stated red lines can be bridged.
Trump is of course, right: only Zelensky can end the war in Ukraine if he chooses to. He chooses not to, and that is a mistake. https://t.co/oZUmpifUwP
