Amazon plans to discontinue its standalone Freevee app in August 2025, according to notices sent to users and updates in Apple’s App Store. The free, ad-supported video service, launched in 2019 under the IMDb TV name and rebranded to Freevee in 2022, offers originals such as “Jury Duty” and “Bosch: Legacy” alongside licensed movies and live TV channels. All Freevee programming will migrate to Prime Video and remain available at no cost, even for viewers who do not subscribe to Amazon’s Prime membership. The company said Prime Video will be the “exclusive home” for Freevee’s catalogue, which will appear in a dedicated “Watch for Free” section of the app. Amazon signalled the move in November 2024 and has since integrated Freevee’s staff into Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, avoiding layoffs. Consolidating the services streamlines the company’s video offerings after Prime Video introduced advertising in January 2024, positioning the broader platform to compete more directly with other ad-supported streamers.
