Kathy Bates made Emmy history on 15 July, becoming the oldest performer ever nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The 77-year-old earned the nod for playing septuagenarian attorney Madeline “Matty” Matlock in CBS’s reboot of “Matlock.” Bates eclipses the previous record set by Angela Lansbury, who was 70 when she last competed in the category in 1996 for “Murder, She Wrote.” Her nomination also delivers CBS its first contender in the slot in more than a decade, underscoring a rare breakthrough for a broadcast drama amid streaming-era dominance. The acting legend now holds 15 Emmy nominations and two wins, alongside an Academy Award for 1990’s “Misery.” Winners of the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced on 14 September in a telecast hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze and carried live on CBS.
