President Donald Trump supports Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal for Moscow to assume full control of Ukraine’s Donbas region and freeze the front lines elsewhere as part of a peace agreement, Fox News reported, citing a European diplomat familiar with the talks. The diplomat said Trump conveyed the position after meeting Putin in Alaska on Friday, reversing an earlier push for a temporary cease-fire in favour of a comprehensive settlement. The Donbas—which covers the Luhansk and Donetsk provinces and had a pre-war population of about 6.5 million—remains partly under Kyiv’s control, with Ukraine still holding roughly 30 percent of Donetsk. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is due at the White House on Monday, has repeatedly ruled out relinquishing territory, arguing that such concessions would violate Ukraine’s constitution and leave the country vulnerable to future attacks. In a weekend social-media post, Trump said European leaders agreed that pursuing a full peace deal is the most effective way to halt the fighting. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told ZDF television that, according to Trump, Moscow appears willing to negotiate along existing lines of contact rather than Russia’s declared administrative boundaries. Republican Senator Marco Rubio pushed back on the Fox News account during an on-air interview, saying the unnamed source “doesn’t know what they are talking about.” The White House and the Kremlin have not issued public statements on the reported proposal.
