Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that Kyiv cannot cede any territory to Russia because the country’s constitution forbids giving up or trading land. Speaking in Brussels alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Zelensky insisted that the current front line, not Moscow’s wider claims, should serve as the basis for negotiations and urged an immediate cease-fire. The remarks come two days after Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an Alaska meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, demanded that Ukraine withdraw from the entire Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Zelensky countered that Russia has failed to seize all of Donetsk despite more than a decade of fighting and that “handing over Ukrainian territory is impossible.” Zelensky will travel to Washington on Monday for talks with Trump that European leaders—including von der Leyen and France’s Emmanuel Macron—plan to attend. The Ukrainian leader said any territorial settlement must be discussed only at a trilateral summit with Ukraine, the United States and Russia, warning that additional sanctions should follow if Moscow refuses such a format.
