U.S. President Donald Trump said on social-media late Sunday that Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy could “end the war with Russia almost immediately” if Kyiv agrees to relinquish any attempt to retake Crimea and abandons its ambition to join NATO. The comments come three and a half years into Moscow’s full-scale invasion and ahead of a face-to-face meeting between the two presidents at the White House on Monday. Trump’s post framed the concessions as prerequisites for peace, adding that he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin also wants the conflict to end. The remarks follow Trump’s 15 August summit with Putin in Alaska, where no cease-fire was reached but the U.S. leader said “big progress” had been made. Zelenskyy will arrive in Washington accompanied by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the leaders of France, Britain, Germany, Italy and Finland as well as NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. The group intends to press for durable security guarantees for Ukraine and to resist pressure for territorial concessions in the Donbas. Trump is scheduled to meet Zelenskyy privately before holding a broader session with the European delegation.
