Sweden, Denmark and Norway on 5 August jointly pledged a combined $500 million to finance the purchase of U.S. weapons for Ukraine, becoming the first contributors to a new NATO-coordinated procurement scheme backed by Washington. The funds will be used to acquire Patriot air-defence batteries, anti-tank weapons, ammunition and spare parts drawn from U.S. stockpiles. Deliveries will be channelled through the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), under which NATO aggregates allied financing while the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, validates equipment according to Kyiv’s battlefield needs. Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson said Ukraine “is fighting for our security as well,” while NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised the rapid Nordic contribution, noting that allies provide 99% of Ukraine’s military support. The announcement follows a similar €500 million commitment by the Netherlands a day earlier, underscoring efforts to accelerate arms flows as Russia’s offensive continues.
