A series of earthquakes struck the region around the border of Mexico and Guatemala on August 9, 2025. The strongest tremor was reported with a magnitude of 6.0 near Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, Mexico, located approximately 117 kilometers southwest of Suchiate municipality, adjacent to Guatemala. This earthquake was confirmed by Mexico's Servicio Sismológico Nacional and did not cause reported damages or injuries. Concurrently, Guatemala experienced a seismic event with magnitudes reported between 5.7 and 5.9 by various sources, including the Insivumeh seismology department, affecting the southwest coast near a major fault line between the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates. In response, Chiapas's Protección Civil activated monitoring protocols across the state. Meanwhile, Guatemalan authorities continued to address damages in Jutiapa related to recent tremors and ongoing heavy rains in 2025.
