President Donald Trump has privately discussed intervening in New York City’s 2025 mayoral race in an effort to prevent Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani from winning, the New York Times reported, citing people briefed on the conversations. Trump has asked political allies and donors which rival—incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, former Governor Andrew Cuomo or Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa—has the best chance of consolidating anti-Mamdani voters. According to the report, Trump recently spoke directly with Cuomo, an old associate now running as an independent, after being shown private polling by strategist Mark Penn and former City Council president Andrew Stein suggesting Cuomo could remain competitive in a one-on-one matchup. While advisers say the president may still decide to remain neutral, any endorsement could upend an already fractious contest in the heavily Democratic city. The prospect of White House involvement is drawing mixed reactions. Sliwa has publicly urged Trump to stay out, warning that the race could devolve into a referendum on the president and hand Mamdani an advantage. Mamdani, meanwhile, accused Cuomo of “conspiring” with Trump to rig the election, branding the alleged coordination as disqualifying. Governor Kathy Hochul said she sees “areas of alignment” with Mamdani on affordability issues, even as she acknowledged policy differences. Cuomo has attacked Mamdani for occupying a $2,300-a-month rent-stabilized apartment despite what he calls the assemblyman’s substantial personal wealth, proposing “Zohran’s Law” to bar affluent tenants from subsidized housing. Adams, who skipped the Democratic primary after federal corruption charges were dropped, is also running as an independent. With four major candidates still in the field, strategists say Trump’s decision—whether to endorse, recruit donors or simply remain silent—could determine whether opposition to Mamdani coalesces before the Nov. 4 general election.
I've always liked Bill de Blasio. He is consistently good on social welfare policies and, had he not been forced by Cuomo to embrace draconian lockdown policies, probably would have pursued a more rational Covid response in New York. https://t.co/rfSOHsuDWr
