The 33-year-old, ranked No. 136, secured his first victory over a top-10 opponent since 2022 and only his second main-draw win at the All England Club in the past five years. The loss compounds a rough start for seeded contenders, with 13 men’s seeds already gone in the first round. Italian fortunes continued to diverge as last year’s finalist Jasmine Paolini fell 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova in the second round, while No. 22 seed Flavio Cobolli advanced to the third round for the first time by dispatching British wild card Jack Pinnington Jones 6-1, 7-6(6), 6-2. Cobolli is now the sole Italian left in the men’s draw heading into the tournament’s first weekend.
