Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Washington late Sunday ahead of White House talks scheduled for Monday with U.S. President Donald Trump. The bilateral session at 1:15 p.m. Eastern Time will be followed by an expanded 3 p.m. meeting that includes European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and the leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Finland—an unusual show of trans-Atlantic unity three days after Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. U.S. officials say the focus will be a possible American-led system of security guarantees for Ukraine that would mirror NATO’s Article 5 collective-defence clause without granting Kyiv formal alliance membership. Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff has described the offer as “robust,” and Zelenskyy has called the prospect “historic” provided it delivers practical protection on land, in the air and at sea. The talks take place amid sharp public statements from the U.S. president. On his Truth Social account, Trump said Ukraine’s bid to recover Crimea and join NATO is “off the table” and suggested Zelenskyy could end the 42-month war “almost immediately” if he agrees to territorial concessions in the east. Zelenskyy, speaking in Brussels before departing, rejected ceding land and insisted that “Russia must end the war it started.” European capitals are concerned Trump may press Kyiv into an agreement viewed as favourable to Moscow. French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated that international borders cannot be changed by force, while U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised Zelenskyy’s pursuit of a “just and lasting peace.” The sense of urgency was underscored Monday by a Russian drone strike that killed three people in Kharkiv as the leaders gathered in Washington.
