President Claudia Sheinbaum made her first official visit to Guanajuato since taking office, inaugurating the Centro Libre para las Mujeres in the city of Silao. The facility is part of a federal programme that aims to establish a women’s centre in every municipality; 678 are already operating nationwide. Sheinbaum said the initiative is designed to provide legal, psychological and vocational support and to underscore what she called a “new history” that recognises women’s role in Mexico’s public life. The event was briefly interrupted when some attendees shouted “¡Seguridad!”—a demand for greater public safety in a state that leads the country in homicides. Guanajuato accounted for roughly 13.3% of national murder victims in the first five months of 2025, and six people were killed in a shooting in the state earlier on Saturday. Urging respect, Sheinbaum told the crowd that their concerns would be addressed in dialogue and emphasised that freedom of expression would be upheld. Surrounded by supporters after the ceremony, the president climbed onto a vehicle and, using a megaphone, thanked residents for their welcome. Flanked by Governor Libia Denisse García and federal officials, Sheinbaum reiterated that her presidency represents a collective advance for Mexico’s women, declaring, “No llegó Claudia, llegamos todas.”
