Israel said it has killed Hakham Muhammad Issa Al-Issa, a founding member of Hamas’s armed wing and a principal architect of the 7 October 2023 attacks, in a precision airstrike on Gaza City’s Sabra neighbourhood. The operation, announced on 28 June, was carried out jointly by the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet internal security agency. According to the military, Al-Issa headed Hamas’s Combat Support Headquarters, supervising force build-up, training, and both aerial and naval attack capabilities. His death removes what the IDF called a key source of operational knowledge and one of the last senior Hamas commanders still active inside the Gaza Strip. The strike is part of a broader Israeli campaign to dismantle Hamas’s leadership and infrastructure. On 17 June the IDF killed Ibrahim Abu-Shamala, the group’s finance chief, in central Gaza, while a separate three-month operation in Hebron has led to the arrest of more than 60 suspected operatives and the seizure of 22 weapons. Israeli forces say they will continue targeting figures linked to the October 7 assault as ground and air operations across Gaza persist.
