Amazon Prime Video released its latest original film, “Heads of State,” worldwide on 2 July 2025. The action-comedy pairs Idris Elba and John Cena as the U.K. prime minister and U.S. president, respectively, who must set aside their rivalry after Air Force One is attacked and a NATO summit is threatened. The picture marks the actors’ second collaboration following 2021’s “The Suicide Squad.” Directed by Ilya Naishuller (“Nobody”) from a script by Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec and newcomer Harrison Query, the 121-minute feature mixes high-octane set pieces with buddy-movie banter. Priyanka Chopra Jonas co-stars as MI6 agent Noel Bisset, with Carla Gugino, Jack Quaid and Paddy Considine rounding out the cast. Early reviews highlight the film’s brisk pacing and the on-screen chemistry between Elba and Cena. Variety called it “infinitely more entertaining than it sounds,” while the Los Angeles Times described it as “mildly diverting” and stronger on action than satire. IGN said the movie “works as a straight action film” but “falls flat” as political comedy. Elba told Brazilian daily O Globo that the team’s “objective is to entertain, not fuel heated debates,” underscoring Amazon’s push for star-driven, broadly appealing streaming titles such as last spring’s thriller “G20.” Whether “Heads of State” spawns a sequel, its modest critical approval and marquee casting position it as the service’s summer tent-pole.
