President Donald Trump is weighing whether to intervene in New York City’s November mayoral election in an effort to block Zohran Mamdani, the democratic-socialist who captured the Democratic nomination, according to people briefed on the discussions cited by the New York Times. In recent weeks Trump has quizzed a Republican congressman, business allies and pollster Mark Penn about which rival would be strongest against Mamdani and has reviewed private polling that shows former governor Andrew Cuomo could be competitive as an independent candidate. Trump also held a previously undisclosed phone call with Cuomo, an erstwhile political foe, to discuss the race, the Times reported. Allies of Cuomo and of incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is also running as an independent, hope a Trump endorsement or other assistance could consolidate anti-Mamdani voters behind a single challenger. Strategists, however, warn that open involvement by a president who remains unpopular in his native city could backfire. Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa has publicly asked Trump to stay out, arguing that any move would hand Mamdani additional publicity. The still-crowded field—Mamdani, Adams, Cuomo and Sliwa—has given the socialist candidate a clear polling lead. Trump’s advisers say he has made no decision, and some expect him to wait until September before signaling whether, and how forcefully, he will try to shape the contest.
