U.S. Representatives Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat from New Jersey, and Mike Lawler, a Republican from New York, have introduced the bipartisan “Bunker Buster Act,” authorising President Donald Trump to transfer B-2 Spirit stealth bombers and 30,000-pound GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator bombs to Israel if U.S. intelligence determines Iran has resumed efforts to build a nuclear weapon. The measure would give Israel access to the only aircraft capable of carrying the GBU-57, a weapon designed to destroy heavily fortified underground targets. The U.S. Air Force operates 19 B-2 bombers and has never released them to an ally, making the proposed transfer an unprecedented enhancement of Israel’s long-range strike capability. The bill follows joint U.S.–Israeli strikes on 22 June that employed 14 GBU-57 bombs against Iran’s Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites. Washington says the raids set Tehran’s programme back up to two years, yet International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi warns Iran could restart enrichment “in a matter of months.” Gottheimer called Iran “the leading state sponsor of terror,” arguing the legislation is essential to prevent it from rebuilding its atomic infrastructure. Lawler said the act would equip Israel with the tools and training needed to deter Tehran. The proposal, which has drawn additional bipartisan co-sponsors, now heads to House committees and would still require passage by both chambers of Congress to become law.
